The authors contend that the causes of the climatic change in the end-Cretaceous were the results of a triad of meteorological-oceanographic events, namely: the initiation of the so-called Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM); the oceanic anoxic event, or the ‘Great Dying’; and the release of methane from clathrate deposits, which may have been triggered by methane seeps in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
