In this issue, Cáceres et al. propose a model for the gradual demise of dinosaurs and other groups, starting in the upper Mesozoic, which would have been initiated by a long-term trend of marine erosion on land, and culminating in the climatic and ecological changes that led to the end-Cretaceous mass extinction. Cáceres and colleagues suggest that the diversity of dinosaurs was shaped by the unique and diverse world that was created during the Mesozoic, and which was maintained by a number of factors that defined the end-Cretaceous environmental crisis. One such factor was the decline of the large forests that dominated the northern hemisphere during the Cretaceous, which opened up new open habitats such as plains, and further divided the geographical range of groups, resulting in the isolation of many dinosaur species. The second factor was the shortening of the Cretaceous, which precluded the formation of new continents, and so exacerbated the isolation of groups and stimulated the diversification of some species. The authors propose that fluctuations in sea level throughout the Mesozoic had a role in the extinction of dinosaurs, which was subsequently exacerbated by the end-Cretaceous sea-level drop. The authors contend that the causes of the climatic change in the end-Cretaceous were the results of a triad of meteorological-oceanographic events, namely: the initiation of the so-called Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM); the oceanic anoxic event, or the ‘Great Dying’; and the release of methane from clathrate deposits, which may have been triggered by methane seeps in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The last end-Cretaceous event was the largest volcanic eruption on earth for the past 80 million years, which resulted in a massive amount of debris settling to the seafloor, presumably causing a shallowing of oceanic depths.
Some applications, such as Java, require that the application directories and libraries are updated to a newer version before the user can update. However, there are some applications that are not explicitly API-specific, such as the X Window System, the X server source code, are automatically updated as required.
