WARNING: For users with firmware version 1.13 and newer, this is not a destructive update. This is a Destructive Flash for older firmware, back up all data on SSD. We loaded up the OCZ Toolbox, and then the first step was selecting the SSD upon which to upgrade the firmware. At this time, we just had the OCZ Vector attached, as our other OCZ SSDs such as the Vertex 450 had no firmware updates available or were up-to-date already. We clicked \"Security\" and then \"Secure Erase.\"
The firmware update process was extremely simple for our OCZ Vector. Even for someone without any experience doing so previously, it should only take a few minutes (outside of data backup if that has yet to be done). With support for Mac and PC Bootable updates added a while back to the existing desktop executable update, OCZ has further simplified the process.
OCZ released a new firmware update for their Vertex 4 based SSDs. The new revision 1.4.1.3 solves threefold of things. Normally you can not update the firmware if your SSD is a Windows System drive however you can download this little tool that will allow you to reflash the firmware without any dataloss (make a backup none the less).

Besides the increased speed, firmware 1.5 is expected to correct the issue with the SMART Remaining Life attribute, improve compatibility with various RAID controllers and perfect the garbage collection technique.
In our previous test of Vertex 4 SSDs with firmware 1.4 we saw them deliver a somewhat lower speed of sequential reading compared to top-end SSDs with SandForce and Marvell controllers. Things have changed now. Firmware 1.5 makes the Vertex 4 series as fast at such operations as their competitors.
A serious problem with earlier firmware versions for the Vertex 4 series was the performance hit these SSDs suffered when filled with data by more than 50%. Their write speed would plummet down, which was especially conspicuous with the 128GB model. The higher-capacity models were affected as well, though.
The SSD is still filled with data by more than 50%, but its speed is almost as high when it was empty. Thus, Vertex 4 SSDs with firmware 1.5 indeed work in performance mode most of the time, preventing any reduction in speed. The SSD is going to slow down again after the next half of the remaining capacity is filled up, but it will recuperate after a while in the same manner.
We were very pleased with the OCZ Vertex 4 series, based on the Everest 2 controller, in our previous review. Being rather affordable, these SSDs almost matched the performance of top-end SSDs with other controllers and seemed to lack just a little to claim absolute superiority in the consumer segment. Fortunately, OCZ keeps on improving this product by updating its firmware.
So now, four months after its release, the Vertex 4 series seems to have got rid of serious downsides. There are no unresolved problems with its hardware and firmware and its performance weaknesses have been corrected. Now, these SSDs seem to have become a very attractive option, especially as OCZ offers them at highly appealing prices and with a 5-year warranty.
The most common problem in all Barefoot 3 based drives is a problem with firmware structures and, as a result, the BSY state for all the commands sent to a drive. When we power ON the drive, it goes into the READY state, but as soon as we select any Utility (for example, the Universal Utility for drive testing), it will fall in BSY.
To be fair, the underlying hardware is actually an updated Marvell controller somewhat similar to that found in the older Crucial m4 or Intel 510 Series solid-state drives, however the firmware is purely Indilinx. I've done firmware updates on OCZ drives without losing all the data(these were on vertex 2s and 3s). I think it is safe to assume you won't. However with SSDs having a backup is always a good thing, as they fail early and fail often! 153554b96e
