In the United States, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in the United States, on 26 January 2006. It was released theatrically on 4 August 2006, and was released on DVD and VHS on 9 September 2006.

Plot The Descent follows Shauna (Adelaide Kane) and her friends, who travel to a remote cave, where they are to participate in a recreational spelunking trip. Before they can leave, Shauna is forced to choose a partner to help her escape the cave and the group splits into two. Shauna chooses to stay with her friends, but is bitten when they enter the cave, and slowly begins to change into a werewolf. Shauna's friends, however, decide to leave and go to the nearest town for help. Shauna stays behind, and has a change of heart, and runs away from the cave into the woods. While she is hiding, she encounters a park ranger, who immediately falls in love with her and agrees to help her, but the next day the ranger is killed by a grizzly bear. Shauna is then forced to make her way back to the cave. Shauna's brother, Josh (Rory McCann) arrives at the cave to rescue her, but when he is attacked by a bear, Shauna is forced to fight it off, leaving her with a splinter of wood in her hand. She then meets her ex-boyfriend, Mark (Cody Fern), a soldier who also searches for her. The group then travels to the nearest town, where Shauna explains her predicament to the local sheriff, who believes her story. He then calls a group of park rangers and soldiers to go back to the cave and search for her. However, on their way back to the cave, they are attacked by a pack of wolves and the rangers are killed. Mark goes looking for help, and finds a group of hikers, who help him bring back the wounded Shauna, who is then taken to the hospital. At the hospital Shauna is told that her brother has also been brought in, and she is allowed to see him.

The Descent premiered at the Edinburgh horror film festival Dead by Dawn on 6 July 2005.[21] The film opened commercially to the public in the UK on 10 July 2005, showing on 329 screens and earned £2.6 million. The film received limited releases in other European countries.[22] The London bombings in the same month was reported to have affected the box office performance of The Descent.[20]
