Starting in Windows 8, The Microsoft Basic Display Driver (MSBDD) is the in-box display driver that replaced the XDDM VGA Save and VGA PnP drivers. MSBDD is the default in-box display driver that is loaded during setup, in safe mode, in the absence of an IHV graphics driver, or when the inbox installed graphics IHV driver is not working or is disabled. The primary purpose of this driver is to enable Windows to write to the display controller's linear frame buffer.
What is Microsoft Basic Display Adapter? The Microsoft Basic display adapter is software built into Windows. When the software provided by the hardware manufacturer is not installed, the software provides display and graphics functions.
Windows Update is also a tool to set Microsoft Basic Display Adapter to the current graphics adapter. You can use Windows Update to check if there is a newer driver or you can go to the manufacturer's website to check it.
ESXi 6.7.0 Update 3, Windows Server 2016 VM, VMware Tools installed but vm is using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter & thus max. resolution is 1152 x 864. How to update to the VMware display adapter?
I notice that some VMs w/VMware SVGA 3GD Display Adapter have max. resolution of 1980 x 1080 whereas other VMs w/same display adapter have max. resolution of 1280 x 800. The VMs are on different ESXi hosts. Do you know older/different versions of ESXi host support varying max. resolutions, or is there a way to increase the max. to 1980 x 1080?
