The Blue Cat MB-5 Dynamix is a powerful dynamics processor with 12 bands of dynamics processing. It's a two-channel unit, and includes both expander and gate functions. The unit is extremely versatile, and can be used for a wide variety of effects: Compression, Gate, Limiter, Expander, Scaling, Waveshaping, HPF, Bandpass, EQ, Noise and Limiter. It's even possible to enable a number of bands or sections of the unit simultaneously. You are also able to use the unit as a multiband compressor, based on the idea that a compressor with good dynamics often acts as a limiter, and vice versa... so you can have a set of parameters applied to three bands, and a different set to the other three, and this can be done using just a few controls on the interface. Compression and gate processes are provided for two of the dynamics bands, plus another two for vocalists, and it is possible to have up to four signals sent to the compressor, or gate. Of course, what's good for vocalists, is good for instrumentals too, so a Dynamics expander is provided. The expander simply increases the dynamics of the input signal, and the gate decreases it. This is a great idea, and is something that the Dynamics processors of ableton (and other DAWs) sorely lack.
A 100% customisable interface with touch-sensitive controls and easy-to-use visualisation tools provides excellent editing capabilities. There are a vast number of parameters and controls available, and based on the file types available to you, these are shown with clearly labelled controls and labels. You can use this to set the amplitude, threshold and shape of a compressor or gate. The filters are provided in both analog and digital modes, and can be used for vocal processing, ducking or as de-essers (although I have found the latter to be rather basic). Similarly, the waveshapers have a variety of parameters and controls, and are very powerful. A 30 band 64-bit floating-point master EQ is provided, plus one band parametric EQ available (in 12 bands). The compressor and gate are provided in 4-, 6- and 8-band modes. I thoroughly enjoy using the Dynamics expander and waveshaper controls - and these are provided, with all settings uncomplicated by modifier keys or spreadsheets. d2c66b5586
