The plot follows single mother Karen (Catherine Hicks), who enjoys spending time at a roadside cabin with her boyfriend and son. While at the cabin, she finds a Good Guy doll, which her son likes. While taking the doll home on the bus, she accidentally drops it into a claw machine. After picking the doll out of the machine, she and her son find the doll gruesomely mutilated. After investigating the cabin, Karen finds the body of a babysitter who has been murdered. She is puzzled at what happened to the babysitter, and her son, Andy (Alex Vincent), makes a statement that "the bad man in the scary mannequin" was responsible for both. As the family begins to receive a series of increasingly grisly gifts from the same killer, Karen suspects that the killer is targeting them in revenge. While she tries to get the police involved, one of the killer's final gifts puts Karen in danger.

Child's Play is the first movie in the Child's Play horror film series by Don Mancini, who also wrote the screenplay with John Lafia. It was originally released on November 7, 1988, in America by 20th Century Fox, who also produced and distributed the film.

The film was a commercial success, grossing over $35.5 million in America, and over $26 million in Canada. It also spent 16 weeks in cinemas in the United States, and a total of 12 weeks in US theaters.

Pre-production for the film began in September 1986 when producer Joel Schumacher met with Mancini and Lafia to discuss ideas. Schumacher had directed both The Lost Boys (1987) and The Untouchables (1987). He became attached to the project in November of that year, along with his brother Stacey. The director and Mancini sought John Lafia to write the film's script.
