Mice were placed in individual cages for 32 days at 2 degrees C, 4 degrees C, 8 degrees C and 12 degrees C. At the end of the 32 days, selected pairs were placed together. The ability of the males to compete with females was recorded. At high temperatures (12 degrees C and higher), almost all pairs were found to be competitive. At 8 degrees C most pairs were found to be competitive. At 2 degrees C, the pairs showed little discrimination among themselves, and most were competitive. In general, the ability to compete was reduced as the temperature decreased. The correlations for competitive ability across temperatures were 0.67 at 2 degrees C, 0.62 at 4 degrees C, 0.52 at 8 degrees C 0b46394aab
