On the first day of filming, Vincent Zhao's first scene to be filmed was in the middle of the river and lasted four hours. In order for Zhao to let the water flow off his body, he had to be kept in an isolation tank for the majority of the time. Zhao commented that being in the tank made him feel as if he was in some sort of balloon where he was barely able to move. According to Zhao, the isolation tank that he was kept in for the majority of his filming experience was actually placed inside a pool that was intended for swimming lessons.
Mounting the fight scene in the Ganluan Temple with Zhao Xian (played by Yuen Woo Ping) and a fight scene with the Three Immortal Swords were the most difficult scenes to shoot. The main reason for this is because Zhao Xian had to walk all the way to the back of the temple to be able to fight as the temple's rooms only hold about forty people at the most. The entire temple was also packed with the temple's most devout followers as well as staff of the temple who were obviously not to be seen out of place for fear of upsetting the deities. In the end, a scene more spectacular than intended was filmed as Yuen described the scene being a real mess.
In the final fight scene at the Ishikawa Garden, Zhao Xian grabs two bamboo poles for fighting and brings them on the stage at the same time. However, instead of using an action camera (as one of the first scenes they filmed was an exciting fight scene inside a lake), Yuen urged Yuen Wu Ping and Vincent Zhao to film with a pair of camcorders. In the film, they had two different kinds of cameras side-by-side on a tripod. Yuen explained that the idea was to make everyone see that there were two cameramen really present in the scene.
