During this conversation, the tutor learns a great deal, since the studentexplains his/her ideas to the tutor and the tutor can observe their changesin thought, tone, and style of delivery. Moreover, the tutor learns about thestudent's work ethic, how he/she feels about his/her writing, their strengths andweaknesses, their interests and concerns, and their creative process. For thesereasons, tutors need to ask a lot of questions.

As the conversation proceeds, the tutor should keep in mind that they are there to serve the needs of the student and not to help the student with his/her essay.Thus, the tutor cannot simply repeat the student's ideas in their own wordsand should try to encourage the student to express his/her own ideas. Thetutor also needs to remain impartial, giving the student as much honestfeedback as possible. This usually involves acknowledging the student's strengthsand highlighting his/her weaknesses. The tutor should also be honest abouthis/her own writing so that the student can learn to evaluate his/her ownwork. When a student asks the tutor for advice, the tutor should not offeradvice unless he/she is willing to take a look at the student's paper.If he/she is not ready to do so, it is not too important to give the studentadvice, since the student will be able to turn to another tutor or later tohim/herself.

While the tutor and student are talking, the tutor stays in the background,refraining from correcting the student's paper or sharing any of his/her ownthoughts or criticisms. At the same time, the tutor attempts to allow thestudent's ideas to sound out and be heard. Tutors need to suspend judgmentand listen patiently as their students develop their ideas, sometimesleading them to conclusions that were not formed in the tutor's own mind.For example, one tutor recently discussed with me her excitement at herstudents' ability to articulate ideas that had never occurred to her untilthat moment. Another tutor excitedly told me about an essay in which herstudents used an idea that she had come up with during a lecture buthadn't mentioned.
