The fourth section, 'Studio Investigations', guides students in the process of studio design, exploring the studio as both a medium of expression and a space of learning. Students learn to engage in a process of studio design investigation and critique, using the conceptual tools of studio investigations to assist them in the development of spatial typologies and the process of analysis.
The sixth section, 'Teaching skills', addresses the pedagogical challenges of studio design and teaching and focuses on the integration of designing and teaching through student-led studio activities and the design processes of critique. This section also addresses the inter-relationship between studio design, studio teaching and a studio-based learning environment.
The seventh section, 'Studio experiences', examines the intersection between studios and learning environments and the broad range of creative and critical pedagogical and teaching practices that are manifest in studio environments. The studio-based learning environment is examined in the light of its implications for design and teaching and the opportunities and challenges it presents.
The fifth section, 'Construction projects', presents students with the construction of a specific scheme and the studio environment in which it will be built. These projects expose students to the techniques and concepts of construction management as they develop a conceptual understanding of the architectural and landscape aspects of studios. This section also aids students in the development of a comprehensive understanding of the studio as a material, spatial and conceptual environment.
In the first section, 'Conceptual and analytical approaches to design and studio investigations', students engage in form-making and exploration. They learn about the ways in which studios manifest in the built environment and the analytical approaches students use as they design, plan and analyse. The second part, 'Constructing the built environment', introduces students to the various approaches that may be applied to the development of a large-scale scheme of any size. Students learn the techniques of composition and presentation while studying and designing site-specific large-scale constructions. The third and final section, 'Communication and framing', extends students' learning and teaching by exploring the strategies and tools used by practitioners and students in the studio and teaching. This last section encourages students to engage in the process of studio design and to begin to develop their own methods of communication.
